Best Spots in Gatlinburg to Take Your Sweetheart

visit Gatlinburg, Gatlinburg trips, Gatlinburg dining

Sweethearts can experience a great meal before they go out and enjoy everything Gatlinburg has to offer.

Gatlinburg is definitely made for romance, and there are hundreds of places to visit with your sweetheart in February. Indoors and outdoors, there are enough activities to keep you busy and also quiet getaways for the moments when you want to unwind.

Sweethearts need to keep up their strength before they start a full day visiting all of Gatlinburg’s attractions. There are many good places to get a hearty breakfast in Gatlinburg, and pancakes are a favorite food served in several restaurants. One of Gatlinburg’s signature foods is fruit, and the apples, peaches and berries grown here are made into some of the most mouth-watering jams and jellies you’ll ever spread on a biscuit or toast. So start off with some pancakes, waffles or eggs, spread that jam on thick and fortify yourselves for a fun day ahead.

Start Your Sweethearts Tour at Great Smoky Mountains National Park

First on our sweethearts tour is the Gatlinburg Trail at Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This less than two mile hike starting at the Sugarland’s Visitor Center takes you on a picturesque walk along the Little Pigeon River. Walk off that big breakfast and enjoy the beauty of nature while you walk the easy course that includes a foot bridge over the river. This can be a very enjoyable walk as you’ll pass through a thick forest, cemetery and homestead. Dogs (on leashes) and bicycles are allowed.

Try Cades Cove for a Romantic Drive

Next you may wish to take to your car for a romantic drive to the Cades Cove Loop Road. This one way road offers an 11 mile trip into the past, where fascinating homesteads from hundreds of years ago dot the landscape. This is a beautiful drive where you can see black bear, deer, turkeys and other wildlife. Sunrises and sunsets offer a misty magic you’ll always remember, and be sure to bring your camera to take photos of deer in the meadow. The serene atmosphere is even more prevalent this time of year when most of the tourists are gone. If you go on a sunny day, February is still kind of chilly, but you can bring your lunch and stop to grab a bite and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Ice Skate and Dine at Ober Gatlinburg to Wind up Your Day

Even though Ober Gatlinburg’s skiing and snow tubing slopes can be a full day’s activity in and of themselves, try Ober’s indoor ice skating rink if you’re looking for a more intimate way to spend the afternoon. Hold your loved one close and while away the afternoon skating. The rink is very large, at 140′ x 75′, and with 400 pairs of rental skates, it’s unlikely you’ll ever have to wait to skate.

The night is young, and you’ve probably worked up an appetite with all that skating. Take your sweetheart to dinner at the Ober Gatlinburg Restaurant and Lounge. This fun casual restaurant can satisfy your big appetite while immersing you within impressive scenery and local hospitality. While you dine on steaks, chicken, pork, pasta, burgers and more take in the views of the ski slopes and mountain scenery. This restaurant also features a large fireplace and live entertainment. As you toast the end of your romantic day, try some Southern Bourbon Pecan Pie to top off your excursions with a taste of good, down home cooking.

Gatlinburg Wedding Chapels: How to Plan a Perfect Valentine’s Wedding

Gatlinburg weddings, Gatlinburg, TN

Gatlinburg is one of the most popular destinations for weddings and honeymoons

Gatlinburg is one of the most popular destinations for weddings and honeymoons, and it’s no wonder, as the city’s natural beauty and serenity make it a perfect spot for couples to take their vows. If you are coming from out of town as most of Gatlinburg’s couples do, it’s important to do some research and find a chapel and wedding coordinator you feel comfortable with. Long distance wedding planning might seem a bit daunting at first. While you can start by viewing some of the available Gatlinburg wedding chapels and their packages here, interviewing several chapels and their staff can help you learn about what types of packages are available. There are over 20 wedding chapels in Gatlinburg. While at first glance many of them may appear to offer similar wedding packages, it’s important to take some time to compare them so you can find a chapel that offers the type of wedding you want.

Let Gatlinburg Wedding Planners Make Your Day Special

Pre-wedding jitters are common with most couples. Fortunately the friendly staff at the Gatlinburg area chapels take the worry out of wedding planning, to ensure that your special day is memorable and that it goes off without a hitch. Your chapel’s wedding coordinators can remove the stress of planning a wedding and replace it with a professional and personal touch that helps your dreams for your special day come true. Their goal is to put you at ease so you can focus on enjoying your wedding day.

Everything you could want from a ceremony can be arranged, right down to flowers, music, photography and a cake, at prices to fit most any budget. You can enjoy any type of wedding ceremony you can imagine, from an intimate candlelit ceremony, to an outdoor gazebo wedding, bridge wedding, a wedding with a waterfall backdrop — You can even get married on horseback!

Select the Gatlinburg Wedding Package That’s Right for You

One of the first things you’ll want to work out when researching wedding packages is the difference between a basic package, an all-inclusive package, and the available add-ons and upgrades. Typically each chapel offers several ceremonies and packages that vary according to the number of guests, type and quality of wedding photography, cake size and the honeymoon cabin or room stay included with the package (if applicable). Upgrades are often available to accommodate greater numbers of guests, provide better quality photography and video services, limo service, honeymoon stay upgrades and more. Depending on your budget, you can work with the chapel’s wedding coordinator to create a ceremony and honeymoon that’s right for you.

Package upgrades can really add up, but also take into account that they can help make your day memorable, too. Ask about whether the photography and DVD production services are included in the wedding packages. These vary from package to package and you’ll want to choose one that’s right for you, or ask for upgrades so the photos and DVDs of your special day are perfect. Some packages let you select from a variety of photography services, including traditional wedding portraits, photo books and more. The pricing depends on many factors, and one of them will be the type of photography you select; i.e. number and size of portraits selected.

Plan a Romantic Honeymoon in Gatlinburg

Many wedding packages include a honeymoon cabin, but each package is different, so ask if the package that you are considering includes honeymoon accommodations. Some people like to buy all-inclusive packages that take care of everything; from ceremony to honeymoon. Others like to purchase a wedding and reception package and plan their own honeymoon getaway. Gatlinburg offers many options for honeymooners, as the area is home to some of the finest cabins, chalets and luxury hotels in the Smokies. For those people who would rather plan their own honeymoon in Gatlinburg, you can get started by viewing your lodging options here. Staying in town may be a preferred option if you would like to be closer to shopping, dining and attractions, but most out of town accommodations are located within just a few minutes of downtown Gatlinburg.

Here’s an example of how you could plan out your wedding package selection:

  • Package at Chapel A offers: Ceremony for 10 guests, bridal bouquet and groom boutonniere, music, DVD and photos, two tier wedding cake. Honeymoon cabin for two nights.
  • Then to upgrade this standard package, a couple could elect to move up to a ceremony that would accommodate 25 guests, request additional photo portraits, a three tier cake, and a honeymoon cabin upgrade to three nights.

The idea is to figure out if you would like to upgrade an existing standard package or move up to one of the next tier packages. Each chapel will have its own selections and policies, so it’s a good idea to make up a list of ‘must haves’ for your wedding before you interview the chapels. Then you can make a true ‘apples to apples’ comparison.

Whew! After digesting all of this information, you might ask, ‘If a person had to pick the very best place for a Gatlinburg wedding, what would it be?’ That question is hard to answer, as there are dozens of beautiful settings in this area, but one place just might be as close to perfect as there is…A ceremony with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a backdrop!

Check back soon as our next post will discuss romantic places to take your sweetheart, and we’ll go in depth about the National Park and you can judge for yourself if that is one of the most romantic places in Gatlinburg.

How to Stay Warm Hiking in the Smokies this Winter

Hiking in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Gatlinburg, TN, Galtinburg, Smoky Moountains, Smokies With piercing cold winds and temperatures that can drop below negative in the flash of an eye, it’s important to know how to keep yourself warm while hiking through the mountains in Gatlinburg, TN this winter!

Compressions and Extremities

Have you ever wondered why your fingers and toes get cold first? There’s a very interesting reason for that. Our bodies have developed a survival technique to protect our vital organs. Capillaries restrict in our outer extremities to bring blood flow and warmth back to our core to keep it safe. So to stay warmer longer, it is vital to protect the extremities first.

If you plan to hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the winter, we recommend wearing wool socks (double up for extra protection) with wind resistant and water resistant hiking boots. Make sure that you get gloves that are also wind and water resistant to keep your hands and feet protected from the extreme elements. Another investment that you might want to make before you go hiking in the winter is to purchase some good headgear to protect your face and cover your head (where most of your body heat escapes) with the same wind and water resistant technology.

Compression clothing is a great start to keeping your core warm. Compression clothing acts as an extra layer of thick skin and is designed to keep body heat inside. Although just like skin, once the heat escapes, it is gone, so make sure to couple compression clothing with other gear. If you are unsure of exactly what you need to keep your core warm while hiking in the winter, consult an experienced retailer to ensure you make the best decision.

Wear Baggy Clothing over Compression Gear

If all you needed was an extra layer of skin, we could all just wear compression clothing during the winter to stay warm. However, we need more than that to keep our bodies warm and toasty. Baggy or loose clothing traps in heat, so it’s always a good idea to wear baggy clothing over your compression gear. With the right outerwear, you can trap heat inside your clothing. You will need a degree-tested jacket that is also highly wind resistant and water resistant. If you can keep your core nice and toasty, your body will act in kind by opening capillaries in your extremities to get blood flow and warmth to those areas in need.

Stay Moving

This is the most important advice of all. Staying active forces the body’s muscles to move and work, producing heat as a byproduct. Be careful of the amount of energy that you exert because you don’t want to overextend yourself or become hot and sweaty. If you do, a coupe of things can happen – you may get sick, dizzy, or disoriented.

So our three main pieces of advice to keep you warm and safe while you hike in the winter are to make sure to wear the right kind of clothing, protect yourself with wind resistant and water resistant gear, and keep your body moving!

Are you going hiking this winter in Gatlinburg? If so let us know when and where in the comments, on Facebook, on Google +, or on Twitter @travelgburg!
